The Worst Jobs For The 21st Century”

Health care, education and financial services–if you’re looking for work in the coming decades, these are the fields to get into.

What to avoid? The usual suspects. According to the projections by the U.S. government, manufacturing jobs are expected to decline by more than 5% by 2014 as production moves overseas.

Same goes for textile workers, such as sewing machine operators, who will see a 36% drop in employment. Technology will kill off more office positions, such as file clerks.

They’ll see a 36% drop in their ranks by 2014. Digital cameras will zap the manual photo processing industry by about 30%. And that guy who comes around to read your electric meter? Expect to see a lot less of him, too.

But these are the obvious victims as the U.S. moves from a goods-producing economy to a services-producing economy.

More interesting are the jobs that are likely to experience slower than average growth (average being about 13%). This is where the surprises are.

Like computer programmers.

Despite all the advances–and expected job growth–in the computer industry, expect the number of programmers to increase by about 2% between 2004-2014. Why? Outsourcing. Americans who want a career in this field should find a specialization, like cybersecurity.

Guantánamo: violation of human rights and international law?

Na apresentação do livro diz-se:

“What are the rights of the prisoners held by the United States at the base in Guantánamo Bay? Is their imprisonment lawful? Should we be thinking about strengthening the Geneva Conventions and changing international law? The Parliamentary Assembly, and hence the 47 member states of the Council of Europe, has spoken with one voice, condemning this flagrant violation of human rights and demanding the closure of the Guantánamo detention centre. This book contains all the Assembly’s arguments, along with the study by the Venice Commission, which brings all its legal expertise to bear in considering whether the detention of people by the United States in Guantánamo Bay is lawful and if there is a need for a change in international law.”

5 Maravilhas Naturais

A saber:

  1. South China Karst: described as being unrivalled for the diversity of its karst features – a unique underground landscape formed by water eroding limestone and marble rocks
  2. Rainforests of Atsinanana, Madagascar: home to a unique array of species, 80-90% of which are only found on the island nation. Deforestation has destroyed more than 90% of the original forest
  3. Jeju volcanic island, Korea: includes a shield volcano that is about 1.2 million years old, and an “impressive and significant” system of lava tubes (underground tunnels formed by lava flows)
  4. Primeval beech forests, eastern Europe: found in Slovakia and Ukraine, the woodlands are “an outstanding example of undisturbed, complex temperate forests”
  5. Teide National Park, Spain: situated on the island of Tenerife, the park was nominated for its “mature, slow-moving and geologically complex volcanic system”

“is a problem we must wrestle with”.

A reprimenda da administração Bush serviu para suavizar os comentários que passaram a ter um teor menos pessoal:“NASA’s role in climate change research is to conduct the space missions and do the model development, and do the data analysis and produce the results that everybody then uses to decide what the policies are going to be” (…) “I actually think we do our job rather well.” (IN New York Times, 9 Junho, 2007)

Por exemplo, no que às emissões de dióxido de carbono se refere, afirmam “There is no evidence that CO2 has ever ‘driven’ the climate in the past, nor is there any compelling evidence that it is doing so now.”

No documentoThe Myth of Dangerous Human-Caused Climate Changeé bem visível essa teoria.
